People who experienced abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced renewed hope after their initial encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

The board president, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's decision to meet with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his commitment to tackling the problem.

Global Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The group is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who admits to or is proven of abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they remarked.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in spring, has taken on this persistent issue that has haunted the Catholic Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to address the situation included an historic meeting on child abuse within the institution and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the policy is personal. The Canadian advocate shared they were victimized by a priest who was later transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we aim to collaborate with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we want to end abuse by religious officials."

Significant Encounter

Multiple members of the coalition, which includes survivors and advocates from more than 30 nations, met with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The discussion, initially planned for 20 minutes, extended to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a female survivor abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

They added the leader was "tender" about their own experience and seemed "modest, funny, and very down to earth."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The organization is advocating that revisions to canon law will enable the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted experts and compiled documents that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," they noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent church-ordered report highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The document also pointed out that survivors repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and concealment."

Moving Forward

The representative shared they told the pontiff at the start of their meeting: "This represents as much a challenge for him to participate in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the meeting, they voiced hope for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, uniting and building a connection and continuing to strengthen that bond is a move in the right direction," they stated.

They concluded that they told with the pontiff: "Even though it's a difficult period, I feel like we can alter how the story concludes - he appreciated that."
