It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime had a six-month break that began in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.
It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
