The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
