EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
